PA Motorcycle Laws to Know

As a Pennsylvania motorcyclist, it’s important to ride in accordance with state laws to stay safe and avoid disruptions like getting pulled over and possibly receiving a ticket. If you’re not already well versed in PA motorcycle laws, this article from Bikers Have Rights founder and PA/NJ motorcycle accident attorney Brad Tabakin will help you get up to speed!

PA Motorcycle Laws to Know

  • In PA, riders (and their passengers) are required to wear a helmet UNLESS: 1) They are over the age of 21; 2) They have 2+ years of riding experience; and 3) They have completed a DoT- or Motorcycle Safety Foundation-approved motorcycle safety course.
  • By law, ALL Pennsylvania riders must wear eye protection designed to guard against wind as well as potential flying objects like stones, bugs or debris.
  • Lane splitting/sharing – or traveling between two stopped or slowed vehicles headed in your same direction on a motorcycle – is illegal in PA.
  • Like those operating cars, PA motorcyclists are expected to stay within posted speed limits, traveling at a safe pace for the current weather and traffic conditions.
  • Riders are required to maintain a specified minimum amount of insurance, although it is highly recommended to invest in what’s called “stacked coverage.”

While many motorcycle laws are common across the United States, some can differ from state to state. For instance, lane splitting is legal in many parts of the nation. To avoid legal repercussions and roadway incidents, it’s wise to be mindful of PA motorcycle laws, plus the specific laws in any other states you might pass through on your bike.
